Bilateral Workshop between ALBA and Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility

Award of the Italian government to Caterina Biscari
On November 30th, the director of the ALBA Synchrotron was awarded by the ambassador of Italy, Pietro Sebastiani, with the "Ufficiale dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia" for her contribution to strengthen links between Italy and Spain.
Meeting of the Governing Council of ALBA
On 29th November, the Governing Council of ALBA has met at ALBA's facilities. The Council has been chaired by the Minister of Economy and Knowledge of the Catalan Government, Andreu Mas-Colell, and the State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation of the Spanish Government, Carmen Vela.
The scientific director of ALBA has been elected vice-president of the ESRF Council
During the 60th meeting of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) Council, held last 25th November, Miguel Ángel García Aranda, scientific director of the ALBA Synchrotron, has been elected vice-president of the ESRF Council. García Aranda will combine his position at the ESRF Council with his current position as scientific director of ALBA from the 1st January 2014.
The association of local companies from Cerdanyola del Vallès awards ALBA
During the 2nd "Night of Cerdanyola Empresarial", held on 21st November at the UAB Campus Hotel, the association of local companies from Cerdanyola del Vallès awarded the ALBA Synchrotron in recognition of the international projection of the city among institutions all over the world.
More than 1.500 visitors participated at the ALBA Open Day
In spite of the non-optimum weather conditions, on Saturday 16th November, the ALBA Synchrotron opened its doors to 1.584 visitors. Following an itinerary of about one hour and 30 minutes, visitors had the opportunity to learn from ALBA scientists and technicians what a synchrotron is, how it works and which its main applications are. One of the most successful novelties of this year were the activities arranged for kids.
New issue of the ALBA News magazine
The latest issue of the ALBA News magazine is out! ALBA News includes the latest news of the ALBA Synchrotron: scientific reports, information about the staff and the activities developed at ALBA and a calendar of events. This issue contains a special report about the first ALBA User Meeting.
Seminar of synchrotron light for high school teachers
November 6th and 8th, the ALBA Synchrotron and the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation organize a seminar for high school teachers with the aim of increasing their knowledge of synchrotron light and its properties. The seminar combines theoretic and practical contents, materials and examples to be used with students into the classroom and a visit to ALBA's facilities.
Obertes les inscripcions per a la Jornada de Portes Obertes
El Sincrotró ALBA celebra la 2a Jornada de Portes Obertes el proper dissabte 16 de novembre de 2013, coincidint amb la Setmana de la Ciència. De 10:00 a 17:00 h, els propis científics i tècnics del Sincrotró ALBA explicaran als visitants què és un sincrotró, com funciona i per a què serveix. La visita inclou un recorregut per la instal·lació i activitats per a totes les edats.
Collaboration agreement between ALBA and CERCA
The ALBA Synchrotron and the CERCA Institute (Research Centers of Catalonia) have signed today a collaboration agreement to regulate CERCA visiting researchers who develop long-term scientific and technological projects at ALBA.
The ALBA Synchrotron supports the arts
Till November 17th, you can visit the exhibition { }, an artistic project of Pep Vidal, with the collaboration of the ALBA Synchrotron. The aim of { } is to create "nothingness" and to isolate it forever. The ultra-high vacuum capsule, produced with the help of ALBA, becomes a system in which the possibilities of interaction are limited as much as possible.
ALBA and AUSE launch a survey for synchrotron users
The ALBA Synchrotron and the Spanish Synchrotron User Association (AUSE) have prepared a survey addressed to synchrotron users. The aim of this survey is to know the present and future scientific fields of interest of the Spanish ALBA synchrotron light source community.
New call for beamtime proposals 2014
The ALBA Synchrotron opens today its 3rd call for beamtime proposals. The experiments will be performed from April to December 2014 in any of the seven beamlines of ALBA. The deadline to submit a proposal is November 4th 2013.
A step forward in understanding magnetic Co/CoO nanostructures
An international collaboration among researchers from Nanjing University (China), the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (Germany) and the ALBA Synchrotron (Spain) has discovered new aspects regarding the microscopic magnetic mechanisms in cobalt nanostructures. This research will contribute to a better understanding of the magnetic exchange bias systems used for magnetic information storage devices, enabling the production of smaller hard disks with a higher information density. This is the first published paper with data collected at BOREAS beamline.

Synchrotron light applications in nanoscience and molecular materials characterization
Next November 14th and 15th, ALBA Synchrotron organizes a workshop with the aim of describing the available tools and the analytic potential of the current ALBA beamlines. This workshop will take place in ALBA's facilities and has no registration fees. There is a limited attendance of 50 participants.
ALBA hosts the Photon and Neutron Open Data Infrastructure project meeting
In conjunction with UmbrellaID.org and ICAT workshops and within the framework of the PaNdata collaboration project, ALBA Synchrotron held a project meeting on September 9th and 10th to discuss the open data infrastructure used in European photon and neutron laboratories. More than 30 attendees from seven different European countries participated in the meeting.
1st ALBA user meeting and VI Spanish synchrotron users meeting
From September 3rd to 6th, ALBA Synchrotron held its first User Meeting and the VI National Meeting of the Spanish Synchrotron User Association (AUSE). During this event, researchers from different scientific areas have shown first results obtained in ALBA and have discussed the applications and advantages that synchrotron light has on Spanish science.
Meeting with the general director of Innovation and Competitiveness
Mrs. María Luisa Castaño, general director of Innovation and Competitiveness of the Spanish Government, has visited ALBA recently.
