Only in case of using a local firewall:

  • You have to ensure the "ipp"-port is not closed.
  • To configure the firewall for printing start "YaST" as superuser and run the Printer module in the Hardware section.
  • If there is a statement "Port for listening to remote CUPS servers is closed by firewall" you have to change this.
  • Open the "Listening to Remote CUPS Servers" dialog by clicking at "change".
  • In this dialog just accept the default "Listen to IPP Broadcast Packets" and press the "OK" button.
  • Then do "finish" which finally applies the changes you made.

Mac OS X 10.10.x ( Yosemite ) printer installation:

To add a remote printer you need to do the same that for Mavericks ( see next section ) but in some cases (at least with 'HP OfficeJet x585' and 'HP LaserJet M602') that procedure will end with a bad configured printer or printing too much Banners: Please follow these instructions in such cases.

To solve that here you have a terminal command that can install a printer:

STEP 1 - Connect to the 'printers' server drivers share:

  • From Finder press Cmd+K (or from menu Go-> Connect to server)
  • Server Address: smb://printers/ -> Connect
  • When asked write a CELLS domain valid username and password

STEP 2 - Install the printer:

  • Open terminal: cmd + space and type Terminal then press enter
  • Then install the printer:
    lpadmin -p printername -v ipp://printers.cells.es/printers/printername -P /Volumes/print$/W32X86/printername.ppd -D "printer name" -L "Printer location" -E
    • For example here you have two printers that could have problems:
    lpadmin -p p0adm-hp -v ipp://printers.cells.es/printers/p0adm-hp -P /Volumes/print$/W32X86/p0adm-hp.ppd -D "p0adm-hp" -L "Ground floor administration printing space" -E

    lpadmin -p p0ctr-black -v ipp://printers.cells.es/printers/p0ctr-blackandwhite -P /Volumes/print$/W32X86/p0ctr-blackandwhite-BannersOKyosemite.ppd
     -D "p0ctr-blackandwhite" -L "Ground floor central printing space" -E
    • This last line is specially crafted to solve problems with HP Laserjet m602 monochrome printers, it has a specially edited ppd.

Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) to 10.9.x (Maverick) printer installation:

To add a remote CUPS printer from Leopard, you need to...

    • From Finder press Cmd+K (or from menu Go-> Connect to server)
    • Server Address: smb://printers/ -> Connect
    • When asked write a CELLS domain valid username and password

STEP 2 - Install the printer:

    • go to the left upper bar apple icon -> System Preferences... -> Printers & Scanners (or Print & Fax)
    • click the "+" button and choose "Add printer or scanner"
    • select 'IP' icon on the window bar

    Afegir Impressora MacOS

    • Select Protocol: "IPP printer" and fill the following values:
      • Address: printers.cells.es
      • Queue: printers/<printername>
...where <printername> is the exact name of the printer queue!!
...check these pages for all printer names: Printers list at "printers" server or Printer locations
      • "Name:" & "Location": Write text freely to describe the printer
IMPORTANT: Choose a CLEAR NAME as this will be the printer name shown from applications

      • On left pane choose 'printers' (on the SHARED section)
      • Go to "print$" folder
      • Go to "W32X86" folder
      • Choose from the list a ppd file with same name as the desired printer!! -> Press "Open"
      • Press "Add" and ask further questions (if any) and the printer will be installed.
(Messages warning about not connection available to the printer are NORMAL. Just accept them).

Old Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) Installation:

To add a remote CUPS printer from Panther, you need to go to the printer configuration utility, and then hold the Option (alt) key down while clicking the "Add" button. By virtue of holding the option button, a new "Advanced" option appears in the dropdown that we can use to directly connect to an IPP Queue. We do this by selecting the following fields:

    • Device: Internet Printing Protocol
    • Name of device: <printername>
    • URL: ipp://printers.cells.es:631/printers/<printername>
    • Model: You will need to download the appropiate .ppd file from the print server (ask Systems) and enter it under the "Other" option in the dropdown.
For other versions of Mac OS X you can probably follow a similar
procedure but we have not been able to test them yet, so if you have
any problem just ask us (Systems) for help.
